NOLA Mardi Gras: Urban South x Dong Phuong Flight & Slice
My girlfriend and I got to Urban South early this morning to try their new Mardi Gras beers paired with their corresponding Dong Phuong king cake before they ran out. I’m glad we did because people and their dogs were lined up before they even opened.
Urban South is one of our New Orleans favorite breweries, and this trip was my favorite so far! This was also my first time trying a Dong Phuong king cake. If you’re from the area or have visited the city during Mardi Gras, you know that Dong Phuong makes the best king cakes in New Orleans (at least that’s what I’ve been told).
The flight came with each Carnival Time flavor (cream cheese, strawberry, almond creme, and coconut cream) and a sample of the matching king cake. My ranking of each beer was:
1) Almond creme
2) Strawberry
3) Coconut cream
4) Cream cheese
As someone who’s from Louisiana, I know a good king cake (FYI Rouse’s ain’t it y’all). Dong Phuong was the best I’ve had outside of Lafayette, with my ranking of the flavors today being:
1) Cream cheese
2) Almond creme
3) Strawberry
4) Coconut
Almond was (surprisingly) the overall winner today, but all of the flavors were pretty good. But I will say– the best king cake still comes from Meche’s (if you want the donut type) or Keller’s (more traditional) in Lafayette. I’m accepting outside samples for comparison if you think yours is better. Happy Mardi Gras!
